Playing off letters already on the board

Open Advanced options when you want to build through tiles that are already down. Say the board has aQ and your rack is U I E T S R: put Q in Starts with and you get QUERIST, QUIETS, QUIRES, QUITE and more — the Q is added for you. UseEnds with for hooks such as ING or ED, and Word length to fit a gap.

Tips for spotting words faster

  • Pull out endings first. -ING, -ED, -ER, -EST and -S turn one short word into several long ones.
  • Pair awkward letters. Q almost always wants U; C, S, T and W like an H after them; K follows C.
  • Try prefixes. RE-, UN-, DE- and IN- are the most useful in word games.
  • Swap vowels in and out. If you have too many consonants, look at the 3–4 letter words that burn them.
  • Check the points sort. A shorter word with J, Q, X or Z often beats a longer plain one.

Frequently asked questions

Is the word unscrambler free?

Yes. There is nothing to sign up for and no limit on how many times you use it.

Why is a word I know missing — or why does a word show up that my game rejects?

Every game uses its own dictionary. Our list has 274,081 words and leans inclusive, so a few results may not be accepted by a particular game, and very new or regional words may be missing. Rare words appear in lighter text so you can skip them.

How do blank tiles work?

Type ? or * for each blank. A blank can be any letter but is worth 0 points, so the scores shown already account for it.

What do Starts with, Ends with and Contains do?

They are for letters already on the board. The word must start, end or contain those letters, and they do not have to be in your rack — perfect for building off a tile that is already played.

Do you store the letters I type?

No. The word lists download to your browser and all the searching happens on your device. Nothing you type is sent to our server.

Are offensive words included?

We remove slurs and most profanity from every list, so a handful of words that tournament dictionaries allow will not appear here.
